Chris Henry, WR, Cincinnati BengalsWednesday 4/2, 10:40 PM CT
In what has become a pattern of grave consequence, WR Chris Henry has been charged with assault, according to Cincinnati News Channel 12. The wide receiver is charged with assault and criminal damaging out of Hamilton County. Gregory Meyer, 18, claims Henry threw a bottle, shattering his car window and punched him in the face outside his apartment complex. Chris Henry has reportedly told police this is a case of mistaken identity. Police say they were talking to Henry's attorney Wednesday night in hopes he would turn himself in soon.
Adarius Bowman, WR, Wednesday 4/2, 9:14 PM CT
Oklahoma State WR Adarius Bowman , ranked by many as one of the top targets in this year's NFL Draft, has been arrested and charged with marijuana possession, according to BuffaloBills.com. Bowman suffered a suspension at his original college of choice, North Carolina, for a similar incident and thus transferred to OK State. This most recent incident justifies a pattern of behavior that is sure to drive potential NFL employers away.
Ralph Brown, CB, Arizona CardinalsWednesday 4/2, 7:36 PM CT
Free-agent cornerback Ralph Brown has re-signed with the Arizona Cardinals, according to the Associated Press. Brown played in all 16 games for the Cardinals last season, posting 23 tackles and one interception. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Frank Gore, RB, San Francisco 49ersWednesday 4/2, 3:32 PM CT
Frank Gore has been in contact with Marshall Faulk during the offseason, talking about the new offense in San Francisco, according to 49ers.com. “Marshall told me not to worry about people talking about how he [Martz] throws the ball – that I’ll be featured and that I’ll love this offense,” said Gore. “He offered to come out and help me if I needed anything, but that the main thing for me is to show coach how much I love the game, and to really learn the offense and every position on the field. He said I should study the fullback’s role, because Martz will use that position in the slot and get the ball to him. So, I just have a lot of studying to do.” Martz has already said that Gore would be the centerpiece of the offensive scheme, making him a hot commodity, especially in PPR leagues. Additionally, Gore is fully recovered from the high ankle sprain that hindered him for much of last season.
Jake Plummer, QB, Wednesday 4/2, 3:10 PM CT
While general manager Bruce Allen maintains the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would still welcome back estranged quarterback Jake Plummer, head coach Jon Gruden effectively waved a white flag on his hopes of seeing Plummer in pewter, according to the St. Petersburg Times. "He's retired," Gruden said on the final day of the NFL's owners meetings in Palm Beach. The Bucs are still pursuing a grievance they filed against Plummer through which the team hopes to recover approximately $7-million in bonus money that applies to the unfulfilled portion of his contract. The case will be heard in arbitration later this year.
Ray Lewis, LB, Baltimore RavensWednesday 4/2, 3:03 PM CT
Ray Lewis is not participating in the Baltimore Ravens’ offseason conditioning program but has been in contact with head coach John Harbaugh, according to the Baltimore Sun. "He's great. He's excited," Harbaugh said. "We get each other fired up. I start talking, he starts talking and the next thing we're screaming." So when does Harbaugh want Lewis to show up at team headquarters? "For a guy in his situation, he's working the contract stuff out with Ozzie," Harbaugh said of Lewis, who is entering the final year of his contract. "That's going to play itself out. We'll see. It's between him and Ozzie [Newsome, general manager] right now. I would love for him to be in there. He's got to work some things out." Lewis, 32, is a 13-year veteran, who won’t be impacted by missing voluntary workouts, because he is such a self-motivated athlete.
Stewart Bradley, LB, Philadelphia EaglesWednesday 4/2, 2:48 PM CT
Stewart Bradley is penciled in as the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting middle linebacker, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. Bradley, a third-round draft choice last year, played mainly on special teams until Takeo Spikes suffered a season-ending shoulder injury just before Christmas. Bradley played extensively in the last two games, and managed an interception and a sack in his first NFL start, Dec. 23 at New Orleans. The Birds were so impressed by the late efforts of Bradley and undrafted rookie linebacker Akeem Jordan; they released Spikes last month, saving $5 million in salary-cap room. Bradley begins the spring as the starting middle linebacker, with Omar Gaither moving back to the weakside and Chris Gocong staying in his strongside spot. Bradley, at 6-3 and 254 pounds, gives the team more size in the middle than it had with Gaither.
Quintin Mikell, S, Philadelphia EaglesWednesday 4/2, 2:41 PM CT
Quintin Mikell played so well last season that he heads into the offseason program as the Philadelphia Eagles’ starter at strong safety, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. "I was a lot more excited this offseason about the start of the offseason program than I ever have been, because of the opportunity I have in front of me," Mikell said. "For some reason, a lot of people [in the media] aren't willing to say I'm the starter, but I feel like I'm the starter; whatever happens, I feel like I earned that. I try not to listen to what people say because I know I can do it, and I know I've earned a spot." Mikell started 11 games last season, and compiled five or more solo tackles six different times. He is the frontrunner to start, but will likely be challenged by Sean Considine in training camp.
Adam Seward, LB, Carolina PanthersWednesday 4/2, 2:30 PM CT
Bill Belichick indicated that restricted free agent linebacker Adam Seward could still receive an offer from the New England Patriots, according to the Boston Globe. If the Patriots signed Seward to an offer sheet and the Panthers chose not to match, Carolina would get a fifth-round pick as compensation. The Patriots need help at inside linebacker, and Seward is the "below the radar" type of player they normally target during free agency.
Derek Anderson, QB, Cleveland BrownsWednesday 4/2, 2:20 PM CT
General manager Phil Savage threw some ice water on the possibility of the Cleveland Browns trading up into the first day of the 2008 NFL Draft, according to Akron Beacon Journal. ''At least in my mind, I think we've operated that we've kind of shut the door on the first day of the draft,'' Savage said. The Browns do not have first-, second- or third-round picks as a result of trades for quarterback Brady Quinn and defensive tackles Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers. Savage said the most exciting thing the Browns might do is trade up a couple of slots in the fourth round, though his track record does not totally dismiss the possibility of making a deal.
Chris Perry, RB, Cincinnati BengalsWednesday 4/2, 2:11 PM CT
The Cincinnati Bengals are optimistic that injury-prone tailback Chris Perry might be ready for on-field work later this spring, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Head coach Marvin Lewis also said Perry remains under the supervision of the Bengals’ medical staff at this time. There are mixed signals coming out of Cincinnati regarding Perry. Last month it was reported that he would definitely participate in the offseason program. At this point, we will have to see him on the field, before we believe any news report.
Chris Redman, QB, Atlanta FalconsWednesday 4/2, 2:02 PM CT
The Atlanta Falcons have a chance to rebuild their roster and their reputation in the 2008 NFL draft, according to NFL.com. Atlanta and their new general manager Thomas Dimitroff are going to be the busiest team in the league on draft day with 11 draft picks. After being awarded a compensatory third round pick on Monday, the Falcons are now scheduled to have four of the top 48 picks, six of the first 98, and seven of the top 103. The Falcons have needs at quarterback, tight end, offensive line, defensive line and cornerback, so they will need all of those picks to remake the roster.
Chris Carr, CB, Tennessee TitansWednesday 4/2, 1:46 PM CT
The agent for cornerback Chris Carr said he expects his client will become a Tennessee Titan by the end of the week, according to the Tennessean. Carr, a restricted free agent, signed an offer sheet from the Titans last week and the Oakland Raiders have until Friday to match the one-year deal.
Vince Young, QB, Tennessee TitansWednesday 4/2, 1:43 PM CT
Quarterback Vince Young's biggest progress so far under new Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger has to do with footwork, according to the Tennessean. "That's where the focus was, and Mike was very pleased, as was Vince, as to what was taking place on a daily basis," head coach Jeff Fisher said. "I think he's made significant strides to this point with his footwork.'' Young is expected to come to Nashville three or four days some weeks while continuing to take classes at the University of Texas. "I'm pleased,'' Fisher said. "There was some speculation that because Vince elected to go back to school that he wasn't going to be around in the offseason. Well, that's not the case. We're still getting him three days a week, he's not missing any (organized team activities), school's going to be done the first of May, and that's when we really start everything up in the first place.'' Good news for potential Young owners, that the third-year player is also concentrating on football, while finishing up the work on his college degree.
Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay PackersWednesday 4/2, 1:36 PM CT
Mike McCarthy acknowledged that rather than bringing in an aging veteran to backup Aaron Rodgers, he could acquire his backup through the draft, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I'm not opposed to it," McCarthy said. "To me, it's experience or talent. I've always developed quarterbacks leaning toward the talent. Youth has never scared me away." The Packers have a pick at the end of the first round (No. 30) and a pair of seconds (Nos. 56 and 60) with which to consider a quarterback and they could come away with someone to both back up and challenge Rodgers. Some of the candidates are Brian Brohm, Joe Flacco, Chad Henne, John David Booty and Andre Woodson.
Matt Birk, T, Minnesota VikingsWednesday 4/2, 1:15 PM CT
Minnesota coach Brad Childress confirmed the Minnesota Vikings have no plans to extend the contract of Matt Birk, explaining that he prefers to see how the veteran center plays in 2008 before determining whether the organization wants to retain him, according to Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Birk, who will make $5.72 million this season, is currently skipping the voluntary portion of the Vikings’ conditioning program.
Derek Anderson, QB, Cleveland BrownsWednesday 4/2, 1:06 PM CT
Romeo Crennel reiterated there is competition at every position, including quarterback, at this year's training camp, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. On the flip side, general manager Phil Savage clarified those remarks: "The reality is you don't give a guy $8 million and expect him to be in an open competition," Savage said of incumbent starter Derek Anderson. "He would have to play really poorly and Brady (Quinn) would have to play lights out (to beat him out)." Translation: It would make me look really bad if Brady Quinn was the starter in 2008, after I just handed a boatload of money to Derek Anderson.
L.J. Smith, TE, Philadelphia EaglesWednesday 4/2, 12:59 PM CT
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that tight end L.J. Smith has signed the one-year tender offered by the Philadelphia Eagles, according to Pro Football Talk. Smith is now guaranteed to receive a base salary of $4.522 million in 2008, and there are rumors swirling that the two sides will attempt to work on a long-term agreement in the coming weeks.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, Cincinnati BengalsWednesday 4/2, 12:55 PM CT
The Green Bay Packers might be interested in signing Cincinnati backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to an offer sheet, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Green Bay is reportedly interested in Fitzpatrick as a backup to Aaron Rodgers. Cincinnati has offered Fitzpatrick, who is a restricted free agent, a $927,000 one-year tender, but he has yet to sign it. The Bengals would be able to match any offer sheet Fitzpatrick might sign with another team.
Glenn Dorsey, DT, Kansas City ChiefsWednesday 4/2, 12:34 PM CT
Glenn Dorsey is not scheduled to appear at the Combine medical re-check next weekend despite concerns by many teams that he has a slight stress fracture in his right tibia, according to Pro Football Weekly. Dorsey showed at his pro-day workout that he was healthy enough to complete a grueling positional workout, but his workout numbers were not particularly impressive. Based on feedback from four teams that have analyzed the results of Dorsey's MRI taken at the Combine, a thin black line did appear in his tibia and it clearly has been slow to heal. Calcium has formed on top of the stress fracture and provides enough support to play through it initially. However, at least three team doctors have shared the opinion with their general managers that the fracture eventually will have to crack to heal properly. Despite bypassing the re-visit in Indianapolis, Dorsey will be poked and prodded by the team doctors of the Rams and Falcons in private visits and his leg injuries will be much more heavily scrutinized.
Tom Brady, QB, New England PatriotsWednesday 4/2, 12:15 PM CT
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is getting impatient with the stalemate between the NFL and Matt Walsh, the former New England Patriots employee who implies he has tapes he made of opposing teams that the league has yet to see, according to ESPN. "If it's just taping team's signals, we know about that," Goodell said Wednesday as he wrapped up the league meetings. "At some point I will run out of patience." Lawyers for the league and the Patriots have been negotiating with Walsh's attorney to get him to tell them what he knows. Walsh is seeking protection from any action the league or the Patriots might take once he reveals his information about the team's taping of opponents.
Adam Jones, CB, Dallas CowboysWednesday 4/2, 12:05 PM CT
A Dallas insider has told ESPN that the proposed deal sending Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones to Dallas appears to be in jeopardy. Not only are the Cowboys refusing to provide the Titans a fourth-round pick this year and another choice in 2009, but there are disagreements over whether the Cowboys would reimburse the Titans for some bonus money owed to the suspended cornerback. "It's pretty muddled," a Dallas source said. "Any time you have disputes over both the picks and the money, you have a real problem." The teams held intense discussions Tuesday night without being able to resolve their issues. "The deal can still be made but there is a lot of work to do," a Titans source said. Sounds like there are some major snags in this deal, but we're confident there will be at least another 100 updates before all is said and done.
Eli Manning, QB, New York GiantsWednesday 4/2, 11:58 AM CT
The New York Giants unveiled the design of their Super Bowl championship ring on Tuesday, a white gold sparkler that will feature about 1.5 carats in diamonds, according to SI.com. The ring's top is covered in diamonds and features three Super Bowl trophies accented with marquise diamonds signifying the Giants' Super Bowl XXI, XXV and XLII victories. The team's "NY" logo is in bead set round diamonds, while "World Champions" is emblazoned in raised letters on the top and bottom bezel, with channel set diamonds on left and right bezel. The new ring will even make seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan happy. Shortly after New York won the championship with a 17-14 win over the previously undefeated New England Patriots, Strahan said he wanted a "10-table ring." Loosely defined: He wanted a ring that could be seen 10 tables away in a restaurant.
Adam Jones, CB, Dallas CowboysWednesday 4/2, 11:47 AM CT
There's a difference of opinion between the Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans in trade talks involving Adam "Pacman" Jones, according to the Dallas Morning News. The Cowboys see a troubled player down to his last strike, so they don't want to overpay for his services. The Titans see two playmakers – a shutdown cornerback and an elite return specialist – and don't want to just give away such a unique, young talent. Bottom line… there are no guarantees that Jones will be reinstated in 2008, which means Dallas doesn’t want to give up too much. On the flip side, the Tennessee organization wants to remove as much egg from their face as possible, following the embarrassing off-the-field escapades of Jones, a former first rounder, which means they want two draft choices for the rights to his services. It boils down to a game of chicken, and we should find out soon who will blink first.
Adam Jones, CB, Dallas CowboysWednesday 4/2, 11:44 AM CT
Adam "Pacman" Jones recently handed out food and personal care items at the Atlanta church where his aunt and uncle are members, according to ESPN. The troubled cornerback is trying to clean up his image, hoping this good deed for his hometown will be another step toward showing he's worthy of reinstatement to the league that suspended him for numerous arrests.
Matt Schaub, QB, Houston TexansWednesday 4/2, 11:24 AM CT
Houston general manager Rick Smith and head coach Gary Kubiak expect to get a starter with the 18th overall pick in the first round, according to the Houston Chronicle. "We can't miss on this player, we've got a lot of needs," Kubiak said. "We need a left tackle, a cornerback, a running back and another pass rusher. We can't say we're not taking any position." Heading into the draft it was thought that cornerback was the Texans’ biggest area of need, but reading between the lines it appears they might take the best player available at a position of need with the 18th overall pick.
Asante Samuel, CB, Philadelphia EaglesWednesday 4/2, 11:14 AM CT
Andy Reid laughed off a suggestion at the owner meetings that Asante Samuel is a “system cornerback”, according to the Palm Beach Post. “If he’s a system player, then we probably all need to start doing his system, because he was the most productive corner in the league last year,” Reid said. Samuel has compiled 16 interceptions the past two seasons with New England and recently signed for six years and $57 million with Philadelphia.
Tarvaris Jackson, QB, Minnesota VikingsWednesday 4/2, 11:08 AM CT
The Minnesota Vikings and vice president of player personnel, Rick Spielman, have agreed to a contract extension, according to the Palm Beach Post. Spielman is entering his second season in Minnesota, and was in charge of drafting Rookie of the Year Adrian Peterson last season.
Devin Hester, WR, Chicago BearsWednesday 4/2, 11:02 AM CT
Lovie Smith wants to increase Devin Hester’s role in the offense as a wide receiver, but not at the expense of decreasing his impact in the return game, according to the Palm Beach Post. “Can he be a three-down receiver? Definitely,” Smith said. “But we have a guy that’s special at something. I don’t think you automatically take him off it to play somewhere else. … It’s been a long time since anyone has been able to (return kicks) full time and be a full-time receiver, too.” Therein lies the rub, as increasing his presence in the offense, could decrease his effectiveness on special teams. Look for Smith to find some type of balance, which makes Hester a questionable prospect at wide receiver in 2008, despite the Bears’ need for playmakers in the passing game.
Tom Brady, QB, New England PatriotsWednesday 4/2, 10:54 AM CT
In what was described as a heartfelt speech, Robert Kraft apologized at the owners meeting in Palm Beach for the Patriots' illegal videotaping procedures that have cast a cloud over the NFL, according to FanNation. Kraft spoke of how the actions did not represent what his family was about, and how that affected him because nothing is more important to him than his family's name. Kraft assured those in attendance he would make sure illegal videotaping would never happen again. After Kraft's remarks, Patriots coach Bill Belichick then addressed the room and explained his actions, while also detailing how the team's football operation has been improved so that no such incidents would happen again.
Michael Vick, QB, Wednesday 4/2, 10:47 AM CT
Owner Arthur Blank has exchanged letters with quarterback Michael Vick, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Michael has written a couple times. I've written him back. We have that kind of relationship,” said Blank. “Despite the mixture of frustration, anger and disappointment in him, I believe in second chances and redemption. I would love to see Michael pay his debt to society and come out and play again in the NFL.” Blank also said the Atlanta organization is moving forward, while assuming he’s not coming back.
Tom Brady, QB, New England PatriotsWednesday 4/2, 10:27 AM CT
NFL owners concluded their annual meeting by tabling the re-seeding idea for the playoffs, according to ESPN. Without the necessary 24 votes to pass a re-seeding plan to give wild-card teams the chance to host playoff games, the Competition Committee tabled the concept to a later meeting, most likely in May.
Matt Leinart, QB, Arizona CardinalsWednesday 4/2, 10:20 AM CT
Ken Whisenhunt said he was “disappointed” in quarterback Matt Leinart after Internet photos surfaced of the quarterback partying at his Chandler-area home over the weekend, according to the East Valley Tribune. One of the photos showed Leinart holding a beer bong while a woman drank from the other end. “Matt called me Monday morning and we spoke for a while,” Whisenhunt said in a statement from the NFL owners meetings in Florida. “I reiterated to him the type of behavior that we expect at all times from our players. He understands that as well as the level of scrutiny that he’s under because of who he is. I was disappointed but at the same time have no doubts about his commitment to this football team or his ability to lead it.” Leinart’s off-the-field activities have been a concern for the Cardinals, who selected him with the 10th overall pick in the 2006 draft. Nevertheless, Whisenhunt named Leinart the starting quarterback for the 2008 season even though he missed much of last year with a broken collarbone.
Matt Ryan, QB, Atlanta FalconsWednesday 4/2, 10:14 AM CT
A lot of scouts like Matt Ryan, but there aren’t many that love him, which is why he could slide in the NFL draft, according to DraftHeadquarters.com. NFL teams aren’t sure if Ryan is a franchise quarterback deserving of a boatload of guaranteed money. The consensus thought is that the final landing spot for him would be Baltimore. However, Baltimore feels that their greatest weakness is along their offensive line. Stay tuned.
Colt Brennan, QB, Washington RedskinsWednesday 4/2, 10:08 AM CT
Colt Brennan’s hip injury isn’t as serious as the media has portrayed it to be, according to DraftHeadquarters.com. Brennan has stated that it’s a minor surgery, and he’ll be ready to start rehab two weeks after the surgery. He expects to be 100 percent in July. Regardless, the timing of the injury couldn’t be worse. It likely drops him from the middle into the later rounds of the NFL Draft.
Jake Delhomme, QB, Carolina PanthersWednesday 4/2, 10:00 AM CT
John Fox is so comfortable with the team's quarterback situation, including Jake Delhomme's recovery from elbow surgery, that he isn't looking to add a veteran backup, according to the Charlotte Observer. "I feel as good about our quarterback situation as I ever have in my tenure," said Fox, who's entering his seventh season as Carolina's coach. Fox, speaking at media breakfast with NFC coaches at the league owner's meetings, said doctors and trainers are very positive about Delhomme's recovery from Tommy John surgery on his right (throwing) elbow. "Every indication is that Jake is making great strides and there's a possibility (his arm) may be even stronger than he was before the surgery." Fox also said he was very encouraged by Matt Moore's play as an undrafted rookie last year and that he's also high on Brett Basanez, who was on injured reserve last season.
Julius Peppers, DE, Carolina PanthersWednesday 4/2, 9:53 AM CT
The Carolina Panthers continue to have conversation with defensive end Julius Peppers about a contract extension, according to the Charlotte Observer. "I love Julius Peppers," Fox said. "We want him to be with our team for years to come.” Fox refuted all the trade speculation and said that Peppers merely had a bad year - by the standards he'd set in his first four seasons. "I expect Pep to come back in a big way," Fox said. Peppers’ is entering the final year of his deal and is scheduled to count more than $15 million against the salary cap in 2008.
Will Smith, DE, New Orleans SaintsWednesday 4/2, 9:44 AM CT
Will Smith is not participating in the New Orleans Saints’ off-season conditioning program, presumably because he wants a new contract, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Head coach Sean Payton said he understands Smith's position and feels certain the team will come to a new contractual understanding with the former Pro Bowl player. "He's one of the guys who has become a leader in that locker room," Payton said. "I think for him it's wanting to get a new deal and hey, all parties want that. It's just a matter of sorting through and arriving at the right number." It appears that Smith has the coach in his corner, which is obviously a good thing when it comes to contract negotiations. Smith deserves a raise after playing for a base salary of $695,000 in 2007.
Gus Frerotte, QB, Minnesota VikingsWednesday 4/2, 9:35 AM CT
The Minnesota Vikings have reached an agreement in principle with former St. Louis Rams’ backup quarterback Gus Frerotte, according to ESPN. The deal will be for more than one year, but it won't be completed until after the NFL owners meeting, which concludes Wednesday in West Palm Beach, Fla. The two sides have reached an agreement on the numbers, but it will take a few days to go over the language of the contract. Acquiring Frerotte will end any trade discussions with the Texans over backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels.
Ronnie Brown, RB, Miami DolphinsWednesday 4/2, 9:26 AM CT
Head coach Tony Sparano, who was the Dallas Cowboys running-game coordinator last year, has no qualms about finding ways to get Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams to share the backfield workload, according to the Palm Beach Post. "I think it's a good problem," Sparano said. "My experiences have been obviously in Dallas to have a couple of those guys ready to play. In our league you're seeing less and less of that one back, that guy that's doing it all the time. I don't really know how each one of them may complement one another right now until we get out on the field and we see them. So they know that there's competition there as well. Ronnie knows that. Ricky knows that." Sparano is also high on Lorenzo Booker, making the Miami backfield situation look very muddy heading into the 2008 season.
Vernon Carey, OG, Miami DolphinsWednesday 4/2, 9:21 AM CT
There are holes in the Miami Dolphins' offensive line, although they're not the kind running backs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams would prefer to see, according to the Palm Beach Post. Head coach Tony Sparano recently provided a rundown of how the offensive line looks with the NFL Draft three weeks away. Vernon Carey is still is listed at left tackle despite thoughts of a switch to the right side. Samson Satele will return as the center, and incoming free agent Justin Smiley will be the right guard. "At left guard there is a little bit of a hole, and right now right tackle has a hole," Sparano said. Keep this in mind when drafting Miami skill position players this year. Currently Drew Mormino and Trey Darilek are the primary candidates to fill the previously mentioned holes. The Dolphins drafted Mormino in the sixth round last year but placed him on injured reserve in September with a shoulder injury. Darilek was acquired through free agency after a season in the CFL.
Chris Simms, QB, Tennessee TitansWednesday 4/2, 9:09 AM CT
If Chris Simms believes boycotting offseason workouts will be his ticket out of Tampa Bay, he might want to reconsider, according to the St. Petersburg Times. General manager Bruce Allen indicated he has not talked to any teams about trading Simms at the NFL owner meetings, nor given Simms' agent permission to begin that dialogue. "I think the good news on Chris is that he's 100 percent healthy," Allen said. "It's been some time since he's felt that way, and I think that bodes well for him. We have a long way to go until training camp and we obviously have a long season in front of us. That position does take a pounding." The Buccaneers have paid Simms $7.1 million over the past two seasons, but he hasn’t played a regular season game in 17 months since undergoing a splenectomy. Given the long period of inactivity, many general managers around the league feel he has limited trade value.
Adam Jones, CB, Dallas CowboysWednesday 4/2, 8:57 AM CT
Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher said Pacman Jones has never had a problem on the field, and he was never a problem in the locker room, according to the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. "I've enjoyed him," Fisher said. "Pac is a good teammate, when he was available, [and] a very good practice player and fun to be around. These issues, involving his personal decisions, are separate." Jones' six arrests - and the one felony conviction - since Tennessee made him a first-round draft choice in 2005 are why the Titans are talking to the Dallas Cowboys about a possible trade.
Jason Campbell, QB, Washington RedskinsWednesday 4/2, 8:47 AM CT
Owner Daniel Snyder is sure that Jason Campbell is the right quarterback to lead the Washington Redskins organization, according to the Washington Times. "Jason has performed good. We need to him to perform great," Mr. Snyder said. "He's professional, intelligent, eager to learn. He's got all the attributes of leadership. He's the type of guy that you're thrilled to have. We feel good with Jason as our quarterback. There are a lot of teams that would like to have Jason Campbell." In three seasons, Campbell has started 20 games – completing 57.7% of his pass attempts for 22 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. The expectations will be raised in the nation’s capital in 2008 coming off a wildcard playoff appearance.
Terry Glenn, WR, Wednesday 4/2, 8:38 AM CT
The Dallas Cowboys haven’t ruled out the return of veteran receiver Terry Glenn, but they also are looking at their options to acquire a veteran receiver via trade, according to the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. "I don't want to dismiss that we could look at a veteran situation, and we could look at a veteran situation before the draft," owner Jerry Jones said. "This is that time of year when you do get good value for players, and picks for players get good value. Players are depreciated right now right before the draft; picks are premium. You've got to have your eyes open, and that's what we're doing." Terrell Owens is getting up there in age, and the players behind him on the depth chart are inexperienced. Look for Dallas to continue to explore trade options including Chad Johnson, Roy Williams and Anquan Boldin.
Ken Hamlin, S, Dallas CowboysWednesday 4/2, 8:30 AM CT
The Dallas Cowboys and Ken Hamlin are currently negotiating a long-term deal, according to the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. Hamlin's agent, Kennard McGuire, met with Cowboys officials Tuesday during the lunch break at the NFL owners meetings. McGuire said that both sides are seeking the same thing - to keep Hamlin in Dallas for the long term. "It's mutual," McGuire said. "We both want to make sure we give him the security that he not only deserves, but that the Cowboys get the player that helps them stabilize what they're doing." After four seasons in Seattle, Hamlin signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with Dallas prior to the 2007 season. He compiled 62 tackles and five interceptions, which resulted in a Pro Bowl appearance.
Marvin Harrison, WR, Indianapolis ColtsWednesday 4/2, 8:18 AM CT
Tony Dungy believes wide receiver Marvin Harrison will be fully ready for next season, according to Colts.com. “I think Marvin’s going to be fine,” Dungy said. “That’s what we’re hoping for. We’ll see. It was kind of strange last year. It was every couple of weeks, ‘he should be ready to go,’ and it didn’t happen. My sense is with an off-season, he’ll be good to go.” Harrison, 36, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, missed the last 10 regular-season games last season with a knee injury.
