March 6, 2007 Shawn Bates underwent abdominal surgery Friday for a sports hernia and said doctors told him it will take six to eight weeks for him to recover, according to Newsday. "If we can maintain the way we're playing and get into a playoff spot, there's a good chance I'll be back [during] the playoffs," Bates said. "It's very disappointing, obviously. Being a competitor and a teammate, you want to be out there with the guys and contribute and win some hockey games. But that's life."
