According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Vernon Gholston figures to be one of the first names - maybe even the very first - announced from the podium in the opening round of the NFL draft on Saturday. One of the few questions surrounding Gholston is where to play him in the pros. He was a defensive end in Ohio State's 4-3 defense, but could play either end or outside linebacker in an NFL team's 3-4 alignment. "Gholston has excited people," ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. told the Kansas City Star. "Those kinds of players, those attacking, outside-linebacker/defensive-end types, are going to help you right away."

Following a story that continues to grow, while the Miami Dolphins continue to talk contract with Tom Condon, the agent for University of Michigan OT Jake Long, and has reportedly contacted the agents for University of Virginia DE Chris Long and LSU DT Glenn Dorsey, it appears the team is adding another name to the list of potential choices, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The Sun-Sentinel reports the Fins are also seeking talks with the representatives for Ohio State DE Vernon Gholston .

Vernon Gholston is a possible target for the Raiders with their fourth overall pick, according to ProFootballTalk. A league source stated that there are "strong indications" that Oakland will select Gholston. His draft stock has improved greatly as a result of strong pre-draft workouts. He would likely be a starter right away in Oakland.
March 20, 2008
The New England Patriots put Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston through a private workout yesterday, according to Fan Nation. The Patriots, who have the seventh overall selection, schedule numerous private workouts leading up to the draft. The workouts don't necessarily indicate surefire interest, but it does reflect that more information is being sought before making a determination. Gholston, who is currently one of the “risers” in the 2008 NFL draft, might not make it to New England at 1.07 according to recent rumors in the media.
