Coach Mike Nolan commented on his decision to name J.T. O'Sullivan the 49ers' starting quarterback, according to the SF Chronicle. Nolan said, "J.T. will be our starter going into the season. He's got very good command of the offense and played well in all three preseason games, but now it's time to get ready for the season." Nolan noted that the decision was unanimous among himself, GM Scot McCloughan, offensive coordinator Mike Martz and quarterbacks' coach Ted Tollner. He said they "solidified" the choice on the flight back from Chicago after Thursday night's preseason game against the Bears. O'Sullivan's performance has improved steadily in each exhibition game. In the opener against the Raiders, he threw an interception and lost a fumble. Last week against the Packers, he recovered from a shaky first quarter, and another interception, to direct two touchdown drives. And Thursday in Chicago, he directed three scoring drives in little more than a quarter as the 49ers won 37-30.

As soon as we watch the film, grade it, and our guys are getting more involved in Chicago and we’ll go from there. No decisions. Nothing to announce.”

May 5, 2008
Alex Smith and Shaun Hill took the majority of plays with the first offense through five practices in the San Francisco 49ers weekend minicamp. But head coach Mike Nolan said J.T. O'Sullivan likely will work with the starting unit some when the team reconvene for a series of organized team activities in June, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "In order to call that a three-man race, some of that has to happen," Nolan said. At this point, offensive coordinator Mike Martz does not profess to have a favorite to run his offense. "He has an excellent chance," Martz said O'Sullivan. "If Mike [Nolan] said any one of the three can be your starting quarterback, I'd be happy. ... They all have a pretty good grasp of what we're doing." Martz added that O'Sullivan is "accurate and quick with the ball," two essential qualities for a quarterback in his offense.
March 24, 2008
New San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz was apparently serious when he told one of the local Bay Area papers recently that he expected newly acquired quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan, whom he coached in Detroit, to be a serious candidate for the starting quarterback job, according to Pro Football Weekly. Sources in Detroit confirmed that Martz really seems infatuated with O’Sullivan — a connection none of them can understand. Sullivan, a journeyman that has been rostered by eight different teams, is an extreme long shot to leapfrog Alex Smith and Shaun Hill in the 49ers’ quarterback competition.
February 16, 2008
The Detroit News provided some insight into the pecking order of the quarterbacks for the Lions in 2008. The report suggests that it looks like J.T. O'Sullivan , Jon Kitna's backup last year, has no future in Detroit. A story on Scot Loeffler , the new quarterbacks coach, mentions that Loeffler "inherits" Jon Kitna , Dan Orlovsky and Drew Stanton. O'Sullivan, who becomes a free agent one week from today is expected to be released.
