The San Francisco Chronicle continues to doubt DeShaun Foster's ability to earn playing time this season. Frank Gore and Michael Robinson have both earned substantial praise from Mike Martz.

Running back DeShaun Foster is impressing San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "He's got soft hands," said Nolan "I think he adds to the passing game as much as the running game. His main role would be to take the No. 1 job if the unmentionable happens. He gives us another starter if something happens to Frank Gore."

The San Francisco 49ers have reached a two-year contract worth $1.8 million with former Carolina running back DeShaun Foster, according to ESPN. Foster will provide a serviceable backup for incumbent running back Frank Gore, but his value in the fantasy world, which was never great, takes a southward tumble.

ESPN's John Clayton is reporting that rumors persist that ex-Panther tailback DeShaun Foster could be heading west. Clayton suggests that the 49ers will sign Foster to be Frank Gore's backup, and the team will sign him in the next couple of days. The report notes that the 49ers made quick contact with Foster once the Panthers released him late last week.
February 24, 2008
The Bucs have targeted signing DeShaun Foster, who was released Thursday by the Panthers, according to the St. Petersburg Times. His agent already has been contacted, and Foster is expected to meet with the Bucs next week. With Cadillac Williams likely out until at least the middle of next season, the Bucs need some depth in the backfield beyond Michael Pittman.

DeShaun Foster was released today by the Carolina Panthers, according to the Charlotte Observer. The team made some attempts to drum up interest from other teams but at the end of the day, Foster was cut. Releasing Foster saves the team $4.75 million in cap room.
February 16, 2008
The Panthers are expected to either trade or release DeShaun Foster this offseason, the Charlotte Observer confirms. Such a move would save the team $4.75 million under the salary cap. The Bears, Lions, Texans and Cardinals may be interested in a trade.
February 15, 2008
DeShaun Foster, who earlier reports speculated could be a salary cap casualty, is on the trading block, according to ESPN.com. Carolina Panthers GM Marty Hurney declined comment on the matter; however, reading between the lines there is likely some legs to this story. Foster is in the last season of a three-year, $14.5 million contract, and he’s scheduled to count $5.8 million against the salary cap this season. Moving Foster would pave the way for RB DeAngelo Williams to carve out a larger role in 2008, and it’s not out of the question for the Panthers to draft a complimentary back on draft day.
February 11, 2008
The Rock Hill Herald reports that DeShaun Foster is a candidate to be cut this offseason so that the Panthers can save his $4.75 million base salary. Foster is entering the last year of his deal and had a disappointing 2007 season, averaging just 3.5 YPC and scoring a mere four touchdowns. DeAngelo Williams was far more effective, rushing for 5.0 YPC and scoring one more touchdown despite significantly fewer touches. It's time for the Panthers to make Williams their feature back.
