The Baltimore Sun reports that the Ravens have upgraded the status of Jamal Lewis from questionable to probable. He's dealing with a thumb injury that kept him out of last week's game. At best, he'll split carries with Chester Taylor Monday night.

With Chester Taylor out last week, Jamal Lewis remained in the game on third down, something he usually does not do, according to the Baltimore Sun. Lewis caught five passes for 36 yards. Taylor is questionable for this weekend. However, the Ravens signed Jamel White, who has extensive experience both with the team and in a third-down role.

With Chester Taylor out due to injury, Jamal Lewis carried the load for the Ravens in Week 12 and had his best game of the season. Lewis rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries and added 36 yards on five receptions. It remains to be seen if this performance was enough to prevent a healthy Taylor from sharing work for the rest of the season.

Coach Brian Billick stated that he would continue to split carries between Jamal Lewis and Chester Taylor, according to the Baltimore Sun. "That's not an issue right now," Billick said. "We have two good backs, and we're going to use both backs because right now that seems to be the most productive angle for us. The rest of it will take care of itself." At the end of the season, a decision will be made on which running back Baltimore will re-sign.

Jamal Lewis was held to 28 yards on 13 carries against the Steelers in Week 11 and also lost a fumble. It also appears that a lightbulb may have gone on in the head of head coach Brian Billick. Lewis carried just three times in the second half, and the far more productive Chester Taylor rushed for 59 yards on 19 carries.

Jamal Lewis admitted Thursday that he is feeling burdened by his pending free agency, according to the Baltimore Sun. He even acknowledged his concern about getting seriously injured. "I'm not the type that's going to lay down. At the same time, it's going to be in the back of your mind," Lewis said. "You want to go out and you want to play hard. [But] you want to be careful for your own health because this is the last year on my deal." Lewis has averaged just 2.9 YPC this year.

Coach Brian Billick reiterated Monday that Jamal Lewis was still the starting running back in Baltimore, according to the Baltimore Sun. Backup Chester Taylor has averaged 5.8 yards per carry this season while Lewis has averaged just 3.0. "We're very confident when Chester Taylor is in there and we have no hesitation with him," Billick said. "But Jamal Lewis is a force to be reckoned with, and when it's all said and done, he will have a huge impact on our ability to run the ball."

The Ravens had said Jamal Lewis and Chester Taylor would share carries almost evenly in the season opener, but Lewis had 16 carries for 48 yards and Taylor just four carries for 27 yards. Lewis broke a finger on his left hand but doesn't expect it to be a problem in Week 2, according to the Baltimore Sun.

In some truly revealing comments, Lewis said "I'll touch the field when Jamal Lewis is ready. . . If that's this weekend, that's this weekend. If that's next weekend, it's next weekend. I guarantee you I'll be out there Sept. 11 [the regular-season opener]."
