Chad Pennington outperformed Kellen Clemens during practice Saturday, and continues to hold him off for the starting job at quarterback, according to ESPN. Pennington's green team beat Clemens' white squad 10-7. Each threw a touchdown pass and had no turnovers in the annual event. Pennington finished the scrimmage 8-of-14 for 115 yards, including a 27-yard scoring dart to Jerricho Cotchery. Clemens was 8-of-22 for 137 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Dustin Keller.

Pennington hasn't been impressive, but Clemens has been a downright disappointment. The Jets held a private workout in Boston on March 21 for Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, which was attended by Mangini, Tannenbaum and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. According to the New York Daily News, Pennington's 2008 base salary is up to $6 million from $4.8 million due to a clause in his contract. His cap number for the coming season is $9 million. Ouch.

Mangini, who made the announcement at the Indianapolis scouting combine, dismissed any thought that Pennington would be traded, instead he will remain and compete with second-year QB Kellen Clemens. Neither player was particularly effective on a consistent basis last season, as New York finished the season ranked 25th in passing offense (188.4 yards-per-game).

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum confirmed on Monday that the team will bring quarterback Chad Pennington back in 2008. When asked about potential trade offers for Pennington, Tannenbaum told the Daily News, "We would listen to anything, but I expect Chad to be back." Pennington will apparently compete with the underwhelming Kellen Clemens for the Jets starting job next season, and Tannenbaum also said they wouldn't attempt to renegotiate his $4.8 million salary becaue they are well under the salary cap.
