Player Notes
November 27, 2007
Ricky Williams' 2007 season has ended after just six carries. He suffered a torn chest muscle in last night's loss to the Steelers, an injury that will keep him from returning this season. "It's just sad," Williams' agent, Leigh Steinberg, told the Palm Beach Post. "As hard as he's worked. He worked so hard physically to get back into shape and in therapy. He worked so hard for that moment and to have it end this way is sad." The Dolphins' picture at running back is cloudy at the moment with the injuries to Williams and Jesse Chatman. Patrick Cobbs may have to start in Week 13.
November 26, 2007
Ricky Williams return to the NFL has already resulted in his first injury. Williams walked in to the locker room with a shoulder injury and his return is questionable.
November 21, 2007
Dolphins oft-suspended running back Ricky Williams participated in his first full practice on Wednesday, his first action in the NFL since January 1, 2006. Coach Cam Cameron is very hush-hush on whether or not Ricky will play this Monday against the Steelers.
November 20, 2007
Ricky Williams worked out with the Dolphins on Monday, but head coach Cam Cameron wasn't saying whether Williams would suit up for the Dolphins Week 12 matchup with the Steelers. "With a guy I haven't seen practice yet, where conditioning is a question, I can probably answer that later in the week," Cameron told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The Dolphins have two weeks from Monday to either activate or cut Williams.
November 16, 2007
After being welcomed back to the Dolphins by head coach Cam Cameron on Thursday, Ricky Williams is expected to practice for the first time on Monday, reports the Miami Herald. Williams won't be cleared to play in a game until Week 12, but it's unclear what Cameron's exact plans are for him. He reported to Miami at his 230-pound regular playing weight and talked about having regained a passion for football. But he also made comments about his return being financially motivated as much as anything else, and it stands to reason he'll need some time to get into playing shape. In other words, don't go crazy trying to find a spot for him on your fantasy bench.
November 15, 2007
While there's no word yet on whether head coach Cam Cameron will allow Ricky Williams to return to the team, Dolphins players indicated Wednesday that they'd welcome him back. "Yeah, I would. We're 0-9," linebacker Joey Porter told the Miami Herald. "I'd welcome bin Laden if he could run the ball like Ricky did." Cameron is expected to meet face-to-face with Williams on Thursday, but it still seems like a stretch that a guy who's been out of the NFL for nearly two years will return to action and suddenly become an impact player down the stretch for the Dolphins.
November 14, 2007
The NFL has reinstated Ricky Williams, who has not played in the league since the 2005 season because of a suspension for numerous violations of the league's drug policy, according to the Sports Network. "Ricky Williams was notified this morning by Commissioner Goodell that he has been reinstated as an NFL player," the NFL said in a statement. "Williams can begin attending team meetings and practicing immediately, but will not be eligible to play in games until Week 12 when the Dolphins play at Pittsburgh (Monday night, November 26). The Dolphins will receive a roster exemption for Williams for up to two weeks when he begins practicing, starting no later than Monday." It remains to be seen if the Dolphins will welcome Williams back, and even if they do, it's unlikely he'll have much fantasy value the rest of the way.
November 14, 2007
The Dolphins are expecting a ruling on the status of suspended running back Ricky Williams as soon as Wednesday, reports the Miami Herald. Even if Williams is reinstated by commissioner Roger Goodell, the Herald speculates that the team would not activate him this season.
October 23, 2007
Coach Cam Cameron still refuses to comment on the status of suspended running back Ricky Williams . As for a replacement for the injured Ronnie Brown, Cameron told the Miami Herald, "We've got three guys that we'll go with. You don't replace Ronnie Brown, but you say, 'OK, these are the guys we have. How do we maximize the guys we have." Jesse Chatman will be the starter and get the vast majority of the carries, with Patrick Cobbs serving as his backup while Williams continues to wait for the NFL to hear his reinstatement plea, which could come sometime in the next several weeks. Even if the NFL opts to reinstate him, it's unclear what shape Williams is in and how (or if) the Dolphins would use him.
October 2, 2007
Ricky Williams officially applied for reinstatement into the NFL on Monday. "Ricky is extremely excited about the prospect of playing in the NFL agan and hopeful for a positive response," his agent Leigh Steinberg told the Miami Herald. Both the NFL and the Dolphins, who retain Williams' rights, declined comment. Under the NFL's substance abuse program, league doctors have up to 45 days to submit a report an recommendation to the commissioner, who then has 15 more days to make a decision.
September 15, 2007
Ricky Williams plans to seek reinstatement into the NFL when eligible after Oct. 1. The Dolphins gave no comment Friday about whether they would welcome him back, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The club has him under contract through next season, but it would be surprising if they kept him on their roster if he's allowed back in the NFL.
May 11, 2007
Running back Ricky Williams reportedly tested positive for marijuana in April and won’t be able to apply for reinstatement, sources told ESPN.com. Williams was suspended last year for violating the league’s substance abuse policy and played in Canada last season but was expected to apply for reinstatement this month. The league has not yet officially commented on the situation.
April 25, 2007
Ricky Williams is eligible to apply for NFL reinstatement Wednesday on the anniversary of his one-year suspension for a fourth failed drug test, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will have 60 days to decide Williams' fate. A favorable decision for Williams is ultimately expected, provided he passes the medical and drug-testing scrutiny required by the league's substance-abuse policy.
April 20, 2007
Rams coach Scott Linehan said he would entertain the prospect of bringing Ricky Williams to St. Louis as the team's No. 2 running back, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Williams played for Miami when Linehan was Dolphins offensive coordinator in 2005. "Based on how he played and the kind of person he was to be around, and the professional he was, I would certainly consider it," Linehan said Thursday. "He's proven himself with me. I know there would a certain amount of risk involved on that. . . I would have to look into it a little bit more."
April 19, 2007
The Dolphins probably won't find out until well after the NFL's draft whether Ricky Williams will be reinstated for next season, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Although he's technically eligible to be reinstated in six days, the petition process will take more time.
April 6, 2007
Ricky Williams has applied for reinstatement into the NFL, asking the league to allow him to return to the Miami Dolphins, the AP reports. Williams will be eligible for possible reinstatement after April 27. Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said the team had no comment because Williams is not yet eligible for reinstatement.
April 2, 2007
Ricky Williams has prepared a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell requesting reinstatement back into the league, his agent told the Miami Herald. "It's ready," agent Leigh Steinberg said. "And if he hasn't sent it already, he'll be sending it soon."
February 3, 2007
Coach Cam Cameron was noncommittal Friday about whether he would want Ricky Williams back with the Dolphins next year, according to the Miami Herald. "First, he hasn't been reinstated," Cameron said of Williams. "You serve the organization, you serve yourself best, when you deal with things you can control. Right now we have no control over whether he'll be reinstated or not. Once the process runs its course, then I think you sit down and start thinking about [bringing him back] and start discussing it." Williams played in the CFL last year while serving a one-year NFL suspension.
January 31, 2007
Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga said that he will leave the future of Ricky Williams up to the coaching staff, according to the Miami Herald. Williams played in the CFL last year while serving a one-year NFL suspension.
January 5, 2007
According to his agent, Ricky Williams is taking and passing all his tests in the NFL's drug testing program and intends to apply for re-admission to the league in April, the Miami Herald Thursday reports. Agent Leigh Steinberg also said Williams will play for whichever coach the Dolphins pick as a successor to Nick Saban. "Ricky didn't have input when the team was hiring Nick Saban and he's confident the organization will make a good choice and he'll respect that choice," Steinberg said. "And Ricky will play for that coach."
