Speedy Claxton's season is over before it even began. He was told this week that he'll require microfracture surgery if he wants to try to extend his basketball career, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Claxton said he isn't sure what he's going to do. "This is something you have to think through before doing anything one way or the other," Claxton said. Claxton had yet to play this season due to his ailing knee, and it looks like he won't be back for quite some time, if he doesn't retire.

Hawks guard Speedy Claxton has missed the Hawks’ last two preseason games and won’t play again on Thursday because of soreness in his right knee. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Claxton has been in Vancouver, British Columbia where he was getting a consultation on his knee, which isn’t the same one he had surgery on in June which cost him 40 games last season. “The MRI came back clean, so I don’t know what the severity of his injury might be,” coach Mike Woodson told the paper. “But we have to move on. We can’t wait.”

Hawks guard Speedy Claxton was one of three point guards not in uniform for Atlanta in Tuesday’s exhibition victory over Minnesota. The AP reported that Claxton, who is recovering from offseason knee surgery, is not even able to practice with the team. However, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Claxton is not with the team for personal reasons.

Frequently injured guard Speedy Claxton sat out Thursday’s preseason game with the Bobcats as a precautionary measure, the AP reported. Acie Law started in his place and played 38 minutes, chipping in 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals.

After a disappointing and injury-riddled season, Hawks guard Speedy Claxton is still expected to start despite the head-turning play of rookie Acie Law this preseason. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that coach Mike Woodson had been mixing up player combinations early on in training camp, but the projected starting five of Claxton, Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, and Zaza Pachulia began playing together before Monday’s exhibition opener.

Speedy Claxton missed half of last season and struggled all of it due to pain in his left knee that team doctors determined was just muscle imbalance and instability. But after visiting Dr. Brian Day in Vancouver, British Columbia, it was determined that Claxton had a small cartilage tear in his knee. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Claxton had surgery on the knee June 20 to have the cartilage tear removed and the remaining cartilage smoothed out, leaving Speedy able to run without pain. He can engage in full-court activities in another two weeks.

Speedy Claxton has been diagnosed with chrondromalacia, the abnormal softening or degeneration of cartilage in his knee, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He won't require surgery to repair it, so he will aim strengthen the quadriceps around the joint. It's not clear when he will return to action.

Claxton has a knee injury and he's set to visit noted orthopedist James Andrews on Monday. "We don't really know anything right now," head coach Mike Woodson said.
