Although Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said he felt Alonzo Mourning could play six-to-eight minute stretches now, he's not sure the center can play a lot of minutes over the course of a game yet, according to the Miami Herald. "Right now, I have no doubts that if we played him in a six- or eight-minute spurt that he could play that," he said. "I don't know one way or another if we needed him for 25 or 28 minutes if he's ready for that or not."

Alonzo Mourning finally signed a contract to re-join the Heat on Tuesday, according to the AP. He's expected to make about $325,000 for the rest of the season, a prorated share of the $1.1 million minimum veteran contract. He should be in uniform on Thursday when Miami plays in New Jersey.

The Heat are waiting until they can buy Wes Person out of his contract before adding Alonzo Mourning to their roster, according to the Sun-Sentinel. If he doesn't agree to a buyout, they should release him early next week, allowing Mourning to sign.

The Miami Herald reports that Alonzo Mourning won't sign with the Heat today, as had been expected. Presumably, the team is trying to clear a roster spot for Mourning via a trade. Expect him to be signed and practicing soon after Thursday's trade deadline at the latest.

Alonzo Mourning was examined by Heat doctors Tuesday and and although no contract will be signed until he passes a physical, the team expects him to begin practicing with them immediately after this weekend's All-Star break, according to the AP. It could be a couple of days before the physical is completed.

The Miami Herald is reporting that Alonzo Mourning is close to finalizing a contract buyout with the Raptors that will allow him to return to the Heat as a free agent. Two Mourning associates who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed his desire to play for Miami, while adding that Mourning has been led to believe he is welcome to join the Heat.

The Raptors waived Alonzo Mourning on Friday after reaching an agreement to buy out the remaining two years of his contract, according to the AP. Mourning resides in Miami and reportedly is only interested in playing for the Heat, for whom he played from 1995-2002. He hasn't played since December 7 this season because of an assortment of injuries.

Raptors GM Rob Babcock met with Alonzo Mourning and his agent yesterday for the first time since the center was acquired from the Nets last month, according to the Toronto Star. Mourning is nursing a sore knee, hip and hands, as well as still recovering from his kidney transplant, though he also wants to be traded and clearly has no intention of joining the Raptors. "He still has some medical issues to deal with that are very legitimate and that's where we have to leave it," Babcock said.
