Mike Hampton has hurt himself once again. The lefty injured his right hamstring in the first inning of his first start last week in the Mexican Winter League where he is rehabbing. "We're cautiously optimistic that Mike can bounce back and be a starter," GM Frank Wren told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "But it's simple as this: there's no guarantees." Hampton has missed the past two seasons recovering from elbow surgeries on his pitching arm. The team isn't sure yet if Hampton will return to action this winter.

He is still a long ways away, but Mike Hampton appears to be on track to return to the Braves rotation in 2008. Hampton, who hasn't pitched since 2005 due to a pair of elbow surgeries, threw a bullpen session at Peoria [Ariz.] Stadium Tuesday for Braves GM Frank Wren, manager Bobby Cox and pitching coach Roger McDowell. "He threw the ball well — threw great, felt great," Wren said in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Braves are hoping Hampton can fill the No. 4 spot in their rotation behind John Smoltz, Tim Hudson and Tom Glavine, who is expected to return to the club.

Mike Hampton, who hasn't pitched since 2005 due to a pair of elbow surgeries, is set to begin pitching on Nov. 20 for Navojoa in the Mexican winter league. "That's the plan, for him to be ready to pitch two to three innings first time out [in Mexico]," GM Frank Wren said in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "He's progressing very well. I talked to him over the weekend." Hampton will make a whopping $15 million in 2008 but isn't a given to be in the rotation, especially if, as expected, the team brings back Tom Glavine.
September 13, 2007
Mike Hampton threw off a mound Wednesday for the first time since his April elbow surgery. Hampton has missed consecutive seasons after a pair of elbow surgeries, but he intends to be in the Braves rotation next year, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
August 9, 2007
Mike Hampton isn't ready to hang up his cleats. The southpaw played catch from 45 feet on Wednesday and plans to pitch in instructional league games in October, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Hampton underwent Tommy John surgery in September 2005 and an operation to repair a torn tendon in April 2007.
April 13, 2007
Out for the year following surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his left elbow, Mike Hampton in tends to pitch in 2008, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Oh, [heck] yeah," manager Bobby Cox said. "He wants to pitch winter ball. He's planning on it." Hampton will make $15 million in 2008, the last year of his infamous eight year, $121 million contract.
April 9, 2007
Mike Hampton will be out six to nine months due to a torn flexor tendon in his left elbow, according to ESPN.com. Hampton had to end his Sunday bullpen session prematurely because of discomfort in the elbow. He'll have surgery tomorrow morning.
April 8, 2007
Mike Hampton had to stop his bullpen session on Sunday prematurely when he began experiencing pain in his left elbow, according to the AP. He plans to fly to New York on Monday to see Dr. David Altchek, the Mets' medical director. Hampton underwent elbow surgery back in September of 2005, so the fact that he's dealing with elbow pain again is definitely not a good sign.
April 8, 2007
Mike Hampton is scheduled to throw prior to Sunday's game against the Mets, the AP reports. He's on the 15-day DL with a strained left oblique
April 6, 2007
Mike Hampton plans to throw a bullpen session this weekend, after which the Braves will decide if he's ready to begin a minor-league rehab assignment, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The team is hoping Hampton, who is coming off a strained oblique, will be ready to rejoin the rotation in early May.
March 25, 2007
The Braves hope to get Mike Hampton back in the mix on May 7, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Hampton threw another pain-free bullpen session on Saturday, as he continues his recovery from a strained oblique.
March 22, 2007
Mike Hampton was able to throw a bullpen session yesterday without any problems, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. It remains unclear when he will be fully over his strained oblique, but it now appears possible he could return to action as soon as late April, if all goes well.
March 18, 2007
Mike Hampton threw in the outfield Saturday, just 10 days after he strained his oblique and three weeks earlier than he was expected to start throwing, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I was amazed, totally shocked," said manager Bobby Cox. Hampton was originally expected to be out until at least late May, but now he may be able to come back sooner. "That was encouraging," Hampton said. "I've got to be smart with it, but it felt pretty good. I'll play catch again tomorrow and go from there. I don't want to go out there thinking everything is fine and then set myself back."
March 10, 2007
Mike Hampton has been diagnosed with a strained oblique muscle, as X-rays ruled out a fractured rib, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. It appears he won't be ready for a game until at least mid May. "He's going to be out at least two months — at least," manager Bobby Cox said. "He had to build up his arm. He's going to have to go through all that again. He's going to need at least six, seven starts [on a rehabilitation assignment] to start out. It's one inning, then it's two innings, then two again, maybe three. He has to go through all that."
March 8, 2007
Mike Hampton will likely be sidelined through at least the end of April and possibly longer after injuring himself while taking batting practice, according to MLB.com. It isn't clear whether he suffered a strained left oblique or broken rib. "He was feeling so good after his past two bullpen sessions and he had been taking [batting practice] all along," said manager Bobby Cox. "He wasn't overdoing it or anything. It was just like something was ready to pop." To fill in for Hampton, the Braves could look either to the trade market (Jon Lieber?) or free agency (Mark Redman?), or they could simply choose to put both Kyle Davies and Lance Cormier into the rotation.
March 6, 2007
Mike Hampton, coming back from Tommy John surgery, didn't feel good after a rough bullpen session last Thursday, but a good session on Saturday has him optimistic that he'll be ready for the start of the season, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I'm optimistic," said Hampton. "I feel I can get there. [Saturday] gave me hope." Hampton will throw another session today, and if it goes well, he could make his Grapefruit League debut Friday.
February 27, 2007
Mike Hampton threw breaking balls from the mound Tuesday for the first time this spring, according to the AP. Hampton, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, didn't feel great after throwing the breaking balls, but he made it through the session alright. "I'm not where I need to be," he said. "It felt good early, then I threw some breaking balls. I didn't feel as good later in the session as it did earlier." Hampton isn't expected to be ready to take his first turn in the rotation this spring, but he is expected to be ready to start the regular season.
February 22, 2007
Mike Hampton is making solid progress but still might not be ready to make his first turn when spring training games begin, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Hampton is coming back from Tommy John surgery and the Braves are penciling him in as their third starter. "I know there's a lot of expectations but I want to be smart about it," Hampton said. "Little bit at a time. For now, I just want to come out here and throw free and easy."
February 8, 2007
Mike Hampton tossed 20-25 pitches, all fastballs, on Wednesday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Hampton, who missed all of last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, said he felt "pretty good" after the session. "The type of surgery I had, there are always going to be some reservations until I can get out there in a real game," he added. "I feel pretty good. Not great, but hopefully [I'll feel] great by the end of spring training."
