Boston manager Terry Francona fielded his team with a slightly different look today, according to MLB.com. Facing the Toronto Blue Jays, Sean Casey has earned his first start at 1B for the Sox while Coco Crisp has gotten the start over Jacoby Ellsbury in center. Francona suggests he is simply trying to keep players in shape and ready to go, not wanting folks to grow complacent with sitting. "It's early," Francona said. "[We're] trying to win a game and keep guys sharp. Our guys are good about understanding - especially early on - about being flexible." While it is hard to argue with Francona's reasoning, the fantasy owners with Ellsbury on the roster have to be growing frustrated. We keep hearing Crisp is going to be dealt, but it's not happening and the young star on the rise is forced to miss opportunity as Crisp gets playing time. Casey is nothing more than an option of depth who can give both 1B Kevin Youkilis and DH David Ortiz a rest.

It was impressive, but you're still trying to develop guys." The skipper did not mention who would put at the top of the order.

As Coco Crisp continues to miss time with a groin injury, Jacoby Ellsbury continues to make his case for starting in centerfield. Ellsbury went 1-for-3 with a double in Boston’s 7-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles in spring training today. Ellsbury has enjoyed a nice spring and, following last season’s outstanding introduction in the World Series, there are high expectations that have many pondering if the Sox will be trading Crisp away. Crisp has been sidelined for 11 straight days now, missing prime opportunities to compete for the job, prove his value, or earn and bolster consideration from potential trade suitors.
March 8, 2008
Fans were introduced to the power-that-could-be, young outfield Jacoby Ellsbury , during the World Series last season. In spring training the anticipation continues to grow as Ellsbury went 3-for-5 in Boston's 2-5 loss to the Marlins in Grapefruit League play today. Ellsbury finished with a double, a homer, two RBI, and a run scored on the day. With days like this, it is hard to imagine Coco Crisp will remain in the race for the starting job.
February 22, 2008
Jacoby Ellsbury may or may not be the Red Sox starting CF this year as Coco Crisp is still in play, according to a report in the Boston Globe that discusses a conversation with GM Theo Epstein. Look, we believe it will be Ellsbury when all is said and done as Coco Crisp certainly doesn't want to be a backup this season, but it is possible that the team will keep Crisp around for his defense and ability to fill in if J.D. Drew or Manny Ramirez is injured.
