Jon Lester came into today's match-up against the Yankees with a record of 2-0 and an ERA of 1.13 and today wasn't much different. In Lester's 6.2 innings he only gave up one run while striking out eight.

Saturday marked the first day of throwing off the mound for half of the team’s 28 pitchers, according to the Boston Herald. Jon Lester, who tossed with teammates Daisuke Matsuzaka, Tim Wakefield and Josh Beckett, impressed his manager. “He’s a year removed from everything he went through. It’s exciting to see that,” manager Terry Francona said. “(Friday) he wasn’t fighting to keep up with everybody. He was kind of setting the pace. He looks strong. He looked strong off the mound.” Lester noted that he won’t truly know how the added bulk will affect his velocity until he sees the reaction of the hitters. The lefty said there were just four instances last year - in Cleveland, in Baltimore, in Toronto, and the final game of the World Series - that he was able to max out his fastball when needed. “Last year I felt fine, but that little extra just wasn’t there,” Lester said. “In ’05 when I would hump up I would throw 94 or 95 (mph). Last year when I would hump up I would throw 91."
