September 28, 2006
It is now looking like Mike Gonzalez will not pitch again this season, according to the Tribune-Review. Gonzalez hasn't pitched since Aug. 24 because of tendinitis in his elbow, but he was hoping to come back to make one or two more appearances. "We're getting close to the point that he's iffy to make it to the mound," manager Jim Tracy said. "We are running out of games ... and my biggest concern is to know full well that this guy is healthy. I'm not going to pitch him just to pitch him."
September 27, 2006
Mike Gonzalez isn't certain he'll get back on the mound again this season, the AP reports. He hasn't pitched since late August because of a sore left elbow. Gonzalez would like to go into the offseason knowing he has pitched at least one last time without any issues with the elbow.
September 27, 2006
Mike Gonzalez is scheduled to throw another bullpen session today, and the lefty still wants to return from his elbow tendinitis to pitch again this season, according to the Post-Gazette. "We're hopeful [Gonzalez will pitch]," manager Jim Tracy said, "but if, medically, it's best he doesn't, then Mike won't pitch." Gonzalez said he has been able to throw his breaking pitches fine, but that the team would like to see a little more pep on his fastball.
September 24, 2006
Mike Gonzalez likely will come off the disabled list on Tuesday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He's been out with tendinitis in his elbow and won't close games during the final week of the season.

Gonzalez plans to throw again Saturday and may pitch in the final week, though Salomon Torres will finish the year as Pittsburgh's closer.
September 21, 2006
Mike Gonzalez will throw off a mound tomorrow for the first time since landing on the DL with tendinitis in his pitching elbow, according to the Tribune-Review. It's possible that Gonzalez will return this season, but it will not be in the closer's role. Salomon Torres will be the closer the rest of the year, though Gonzalez will get his job back next season.
September 20, 2006
The Pittbsurgh Post-Gazette reports that Mike Gonzalez isn't expected to throw off a mound until at least Friday. He's been sidelined by elbow tendinitis, and it's not clear if he will return to action this season.
September 13, 2006
Mike Gonzalez threw off a mound Wednesday and was told there was no structural damage in his elbow, according to the AP. Gonzalez hopes to return for the last week or two of the season. "My goal is to take those last seven to nine days and take a positive into the offseason," he said.
September 9, 2006
Mike Gonzalez is aiming to throwing off a mound soon, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. However, Pirates manager Jim Tracy said that even if Gonzalez returns from his elbow tendinitis this season, he won't be closing games. "It won't be in the ninth inning," Tracy said. "We'll ease him back into that. We'll find a situation leading to the ninth inning to let him check himself out."
September 8, 2006
Manager Jim Tracey said that Mike Gonzalez is close to having a bullpen session, according to the AP. Gonzalez has been sidelined since August 28 with tendinitis in his pitching elbow.
August 28, 2006
The Pirates placed Mike Gonzalez on the DL Monday with tendinitis in his left elbow. Gonzalez has not pitched since August 25 because of the injury. The Pirates may use a committee of relievers, including Matt Capps, Salomon Torres, John Grabow and Damaso Marte, to close games while Gonzalez is out.
August 27, 2006
Mike Gonzalez was held out of action again Sunday because of a tired arm and might not be available Monday against the Cubs, according to the AP. He felt worn down after pitching on three consecutive days Tuesday through Thursday.

July 21, 2006
Mike Gonzalez told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that he's not buying the trade rumors that include his name. It would make no sense for the Pirates to trade Gonzalez unless they were bowled over with an offer of at least one elite prospect.
July 18, 2006
Mike Gonzalez said that he is healthy enough to pitch after tweaking his groin on Sunday, according to the Pirates website. He hurt himself when his cleat got stuck in the ground during his follow-through. A similar incident caused Gonzalez to go on the 15-day DL with a strained MCL (knee) last season. "As soon as I felt [the cleat catch], I picked my foot up quick and strained my groin a little bit," said Gonzalez. "So I was taking care of the knee and it did a little bit to the groin. But I felt great today. The strength is good."
April 10, 2006
Mike Gonzalez was used in the eighth inning of Sunday's win against Cincinnati while veteran Roberto Hernandez came in to nail down the save in the ninth. It appears that manager Jim Tracy just thought the matchups in the ninth better suited Hernandez, so don't be alarmed if you are a Gonzalez owner, according to the Post-Gazette. "Mike Gonzalez is going to close games for us, no question," Tracy said. "But it made all the sense in the world for Mike Gonzalez to pitch when he did and for Roberto Hernandez to pitch when he did."
April 9, 2006
Mike Gonzalez was used in the eighth inning on Sunday to face lefties Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn while Roberto Hernandez entered the game in the ninth and picked up the save. It remains to be seen whether Hernandez is the PiratesÂ’ new closer or if manager Jim Tracy was just playing the matchups.
February 25, 2006
Pirates manager Jim Tracy said he doesn't plan to use Mike Gonzalez in closing situations until late in the Grapefruit League schedule, or maybe even later, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. His reasoning is that relievers only stretch out their arms in the early part of the spring season and won't face the top competition late in games as the regular season nears.
