Center fielder Lastings Milledge misplayed a ball in center field with two outs on Friday, leading to three extra runs in the Nationals 4-3 loss to Colorado, and pitcher Tim Redding was none too pleased, according to the Washington Times. "Any time you give up runs, period, it's frustrating. But the most frustrating is when you know the inning should have been over and you give up runs to guys that shouldn't have been at the plate," Redding said.

MLB.com reports that GM Jim Bowden and skipper Manny Acta indicated they don't want right-handers Tim Redding or Jason Bergmann to pitch on four days' rest. Right now, the team has only four starters in the rotation, and based on the schedule, Redding would pitch Sunday against the Cardinals and Bergmann would go on Monday against the Marlins. Bowden and Acta said the Nationals have not ruled out using a bullpen-by-committee for one of those games and starting John Lannan in the other.

Redding, who walked three and struck out two, continues to live or die by his control, and there is just no way to predict long term success for a guy who has 66 K and 54 BB the past three seasons, but he was sharp on this night.

"He was examined this morning again, and chances are he’s going to make his next start on Friday," Acta added. Redding injured his back during Sunday's outing, but it looks like he should be ready when the season begins next week, barring a setback.

Tim Redding was injured while trying to beat out bunt in the fourth inning of Sunday's spring game against the Fish. After retiring the first nine Marlins he faced, Redding gave up three hits and a walk to the first four batters he faced in the fourth. The team hasn't announced what teh injury is or if Redding would miss anytime, but the right-hander had already been penciled is as the Nats No. 2 starter.

The Nationals signed Tim Redding to a one-year, $1 million contract Thursday to avoid arbitration. Redding held a 3.64 ERA in 15 starts for the Nats last year. He'll compete for a rotation job this spring.
