Updating an earlier story, Justin Duchscherer said that the surgery on his hip to remove torn cartilage when as expected, according to MLB.com. "Everything went well," Duchscherer said. "I just had some torn cartilage cleaned out. I'll be fine in two months."

Justin Duchscherer has been shut down for the season according to MLB.com. Duchscherer has been on the disabled list with a strained right hip since Aug. 19 -- the same hip the 30-year-old had surgery on last July. "He's not," Geren said matter-of-factly when asked when Duchscherer would throw again. "He's shut down. He's going to go to see [Dr. Byrd, who] did his surgery last year, to get reevaluated."

Justin Duchscherer said that he felt great after playing catch for about 30 throws on Thursday, according to the SF Chronicle. Duchscherer is out nursing a biceps strain, and thinks he will be ready to pitch when he's eligible to come off the DL on April 20. He stated, "I did exactly what I wanted to do and I didn't feel anything. I don't see the biceps being an issue." This is good news for him, and he was notably off to a 1-0 start (with a 1.80 ERA) before getting hurt.

The right, who is making the move from the bullpen to the rotation this year, suffered the injured in his first start of the year last Friday. He was replaced on the roster by Chad Gaudin, who was activated from the DL and will start tonight in place of Rich Harden. It's not clear at this point how much time Duchscherer will miss.

While the A's want to bring Duchscherer along with caution, they are also excited to see their new late-inning reliever Santiago Casilla. Casilla submitted two perfect innings of work against the Red Sox in Tokyo last week, pitching one scoreless inning. On Wednesday, Casilla got the call with the bases loaded and nobody out in the seventh inning, but he got David Ortiz out on strikes and tempted Manny Ramirez into a rare double play.

MLB.com reports that right-hander Justin Duchscherer is expected to start for Oakland against Hanshin on Saturday. Hanshin features a familiar face in Lew Ford, who played for the Twins from 2003-07. Ford made a highlight-reel catch in Hanshin's 6-5 loss to the Red Sox in the exhibition opener on Friday. The start for Duchscherer, is either his last before entering the A's rotation stateside. Transitioning from the bullpen to the starting rotation, the report notes that Duchscherer, who was a standout starter in the Minors, allowed five runs on nine hits and four walks over eight innings of Cactus League work this spring, and he'll be limited to fewer than 80 pitches against Hanshin.

Justin Duchscherer tossed 71 pitches in Tuesday's game and another 10 in a bullpen session afterward, according to MLB.com. "I honestly felt like I consistently hit the spots I wanted to hit," Duchscherer said. "My arm feels good and my hip feels good. I don't like giving up runs like that." The runs he referenced were four earned on six hits and two walks over four innings. Duchscherer missed the end of last season with an arthritic hip ailment, but he's being stretched out as a starter to begin this season.

Justin Duchscherer's line from his first spring outing wasn't good (one inning, one run, two hits and two walks), but the right-hander is just happy that he's overcoming some of the mental hurdles with his surgically repaired hip, according to the Mercury News. Duchscherer, who is moving from the bullpen to the rotation, was nervous about the hip at first, but said he made a conscious effort to drive hard off the hip when he struck out Gary Matthews to end the fourth inning. "You hear people say that the last thing to come is the mental part of it," he said. "To know that I can pitch pain free is a big deal." Duchscherer has been terrific at times as a setup man, but it will be interesting to see how he fares as a starter. Consider him only as a late-round flyer in AL-only play right now.

Justin Duchscherer, who is reportedly free of the arthritic right hip condition that ended his 2007 season, will began to make his transition from the bullpen to the starting rotation, according to MLB.com "I can give you a thumb's up," said Kurt Suzuki. "He looks good. What I saw was nothing less than a guy who can hit his spots. He's going to give us quality innings every time he goes out there." Duchscherer is compared to having the control of a Greg Maddux in the report. Oakland traded most of their first line starters this winter and it appears the team is ready to look at Duchscherer for a spot in the rotation.

Justin Duchscherer re-signed a one-year contract with the A's on Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Duchscherer posted a 4.96 ERA in 17 relief appearances in 2006, but he's expected to be shifted to the starting rotation this spring. He's recovering from hip surgery.
