Ty Wigginton was traded to the Astros Saturday in exchange for Dan Wheeler, the Houston Chronicle reports. The Astros see Wigginton as a third baseman primarily, though he can also play first or second, and the corner outfield spots, if needed.

The Yankees and Devil Rays are in trade talks for a deal involving reliever Scott Proctor and Ty Wigginton, according to the New York Post. "The Devil Rays really want him," a source told the paper. "The problem is that other teams want him, too." The deal probably won’t happen until much closer to the deadline, if at all.

The Twins are reportedly still interested in the possibility of acquiring Ty Wigginton to add a power bat to their infield. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, however, the Devil Rays' initial asking price is stud prospect Matt Garza, whom the Twins have deemed all but untouchable.

With Akinori Iwamura sidelined 4-6 weeks with an oblique injury, Ty Wigginton will take over as Tampa's starting third baseman. Wigginton, who is hitting .289 with four dingers and 13 RBI, has primarily played first and second base this season.
March 13, 2007
Ty Wigginton went 2-for-3 with two dingers and three RBI against the Phillies on Tuesday. Wigginton, who is batting .381 so far this spring (8-for-21), is expected to get most of his action at first base this year, although he could potentially see some action at second and third base and the outfield, as well.
March 9, 2007
Ty Wigginton will start at second base for the second time in three games Friday night, the St. Petersburg Times reports. "It's a legitimate audition," manager Joe Maddon said. "We want to see how he looks out there, we want to see how it fits. A lot of it depends on what other guys are doing, like the first basemen and how they are coming along." If Wigginton sticks there, it could significantly impact the playing time Jorge Cantu gets.
