Manny Ramirez, in preparation for future contract negotiations, has decided to hire super agent Scott Boras, according to a report on Sports Illustrated. Just what the Red Sox wanted to hear we're sure. Boras will no doubt compile data to prove that Ramirez is the second greatest hitter of all-time behind Alex Rodriguez. While the might be hyperbole, Manny's stated intention of staying with the Red Sox the rest of his career may have just taken a hit with this move.

Manny Ramirez will not press the Red Sox to offer him an extension or to pick up his $20 million option in 2009, but he would still love to finish his career in Boston according to a report on the AP. “It’s up to them to say, `OK, we’re going to take (the option). It’s not up to me to go into the office and demand a four-year deal, whatever,” he said. “No, I’m going come here to play the game, finish my year. If they want me to come back, I’ll come back.” Manny had his worst season in a decade last year with 20 HR and 88 RBI, but he still hit .296 with a .388 OBP to show he is still a top quality major league hitter. Given the rigorous off-season training program he has reportedly undertaken, chances appear good that the 35-year-old Ramirez could rebound to his 30 HR, 100 RBI ways in 2008.

Manny Ramirez has been training like a football player lifting heavy weights this off-season in hopes of rebounding from his worst season since 1994. He has also spent time working on his flexibility to avoid the nagging injuries that have become common place. Manny is just 10 HR shy of 500 for his career, and he is still just 35-years-old on opening day, so there is certainly a chance he could rebound this season. 2007 was the first time since 1998 that he failed to hit 30 HR with 100 RBI as he was limited to just 20 longballs and 88 RBI. Manny Ramirez said Saturday that he'd like to stay in Boston after this season, but he's preparing himself for the chance he'll end up somewhere else next season, according to MLB.com. His current deal expires after the 2008 campaign, but the Sox hold options for 2009 and 2010. He's spent the offseason training at Athletes Performance Institute and plans to be at camp on time. Manny wouldn't be the first player to have a career performance when he has a contract on the line. It's obviously great motivation.

Manny Ramirez said he plans to be at training camp on time this month, according to the Boston Herald. "I’ll be there on the 21st," he said. Ramirez has been working out at Athletes Performance Institute in Arizona since early December, so he should be in great shape as he enters an important couple of years. His current contract runs out after this season, but the Red Sox have options for 2009 and 2010, so clearly Manny has many reasons to perform well this season.
