Vernon Wells and the Blue Jays agreed Friday night to a $126 million, seven-year contract extension through 2014, the sixth-largest deal in baseball history, the AP reports. Wells hit .303 with 32 homers and 106 RBI last season. He would have been eligible for free agency after next season.

Ricciardi stated on Monday that if the slugger is looking for Carlos Beltran-type money (7 years, $119 million), then the team won't be able to comply, according to ESPN.com. "I can tell you this: If it is a Beltran type deal then it's something we wouldn't be able to handle," Ricciardi said. Wells, who hit .303 with 32 homers, 106 RBI and 17 steals this year, is set to be a free agent after the 2007 season.

Vernon Wells made it clear on Monday that he wants to remain in Toronto, according to the Toronto Sun. "I hope to be here next year and for a long time to come," Wells said last night in a lengthy conversation. "I've had a great five years here and hopefully I'll have more. I've had a great time and I hope that translates into how I play on the field. Right now it's a matter of both sides are going to talk and see what they can come up with."
